Support Compliance Frameworks and Secure IoT Devices with PKI and Digital Certificates

Firewalls alone can’t protect today’s IoT environments, where weak or broken access controls have become a leading risk. As connected devices proliferate across healthcare, buildings, manufacturing and critical infrastructure, organizations need stronger, identity‑centric controls that align with frameworks like the NIST Risk Management Framework (RMF). Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) provides a powerful compensating control by assigning each device a cryptographic identity, enabling mutual authentication, encrypting data in transit and preventing unauthorized access. PKI supports RMF requirements by reducing the likelihood and impact of attacks on vulnerable IoT endpoints, increasing visibility into trusted devices and improving lifecycle governance. Cloud‑based PKIaaS enhances these protections through automated certificate discovery, issuance, renewal and revocation at scale, while offering a unified management console and flexible certificate hierarchies. Publicly trusted Certificate Authorities like IdenTrust further strengthen external‑facing device security by providing OV and EV certificates that meet rigorous industry standards and deliver broad interoperability. By combining PKIaaS, publicly trusted certificates and established device‑management practices, organizations can better secure IoT ecosystems, maintain compliance and adapt as cryptographic requirements evolve.
