ACME 101: Automated Certificate Management for Domain Verification
Managing TLS/SSL certificates at scale has become increasingly difficult as certificate lifespans shrink and certificate volumes continue to rise. The Automated Certificate Management Environment (ACME) protocol was developed to automate certificate issuance, validation, renewal and revocation, eliminating time‑consuming manual processes. ACME uses a challenge‑response model to verify domain ownership before issuing certificates, allowing organizations to securely automate certificate lifecycle management for web servers and other digital assets.
A key advantage of ACME is its flexibility and interoperability. Organizations can use standard ACMEv2-compatible open‑source clients rather than relying on proprietary certificate management agents. HID PKI‑as‑a‑Service extends this approach by supporting multiple challenge types and integrating with existing environments through a connector-based automation model. By automating certificate management, organizations can reduce operational complexity, lower costs, minimize human error and improve security while maintaining scalable and efficient certificate operations.
