E-mail encryption:

Email signing and encryption will work on client-based email version of the following.

  • Microsoft Outlook.
  • Microsoft Outlook for Mac.
  • Mozilla Thunderbird.
  • IBM Lotus Notes Mail.
  • Apple Mail.

To get Started you will need to visit identrust.com.

  • From the certificates tab click secure email or S/MIME
  • Click Buy now.
  • You will be given a chance to select a certificate usage type.
  • You can select one of the following options. You want the certificate to identify the email address, yourself, and affiliation with your employer, without business affiliation or just for the email address.
  • For this purpose, we will be selecting: "I want my certificate to identify only my email address."
  • You can choose between software and hardware storage.
  • Be sure to select the validity period.
  • Click Continue.
  • You will be directed to the payment portal to submit the application.
  • Click continue.
  • If you have a voucher number for the purchase you can enter it in the voucher field. 
  • Even if you select a different validity period the voucher will default to the validity period that was selected during the voucher purchase. 
  • Click Next
  • Identrust requires your legal first and last name on the application as we use this information to verify your information. 
  • Be sure to enter your contact phone number and email address you would like to set up for email signing and encryption.
  • Part of the identity verification you will need to enter your home address.
  • You will need to choose a password you will use for your certificate Account Password. Be sure to use something you can remember and keep it in a safe place. This password will be required to retrieve your certificate, and to access the Certificate Management Center to view your certificate information. 
  • Your account password should include.
    • Upper- and Lower-case letters. 
    • At least one number. 
    • Special characters are also acceptable. 
    • With a minimum of 8 characters in length.
  • You will be able to select 3 security questions and answers that are not case sensitive. The questions and answers are all personalized be sure to capture a screenshot for future use.
  • Be sure to verify the information entered and click yes to proceed.
  • Click Subscriber Agreement. Please Read the Subscriber Agreement and Privacy Policy. Before continuing you must accept the terms and conditions of the subscriber Agreement and Privacy Policy. If you Do Not Accept Click Cancel.
  • Click the check box to agree and click Submit Application.
  • Once the application is submitted check your email. You will receive a verification code and a prompt to verify the email.
  • Click the link.
  • You can copy and paste the verification code exactly as it is listed.
  • And use your account password.
  • The application process generally takes 3 to 5 business days. 
  • Once the certificate is approved you will receive instructions to install your certificate.
