IdenTrust Company History
IdenTrust was formed by the 2002 merger of two separate pioneering companies, the Digital Signature Trust Company, a subsidiary of Zions Bancorporation and Identrus, originally the Global Trust Organization, LLC. IdenTrust was then acquired by HID Global Corporation in 2014. An overview of the IdenTrust company history is provided below.
- 1998: The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) allows the Digital Signature Trust Company to become the first bank subsidiary in the nation authorized to certify digital signatures
- 1998: Eight major banks announce the creation of an e-identity company, Global Trust Organization, LLC
- 1999: Global Trust Organization, LLC becomes a Delaware limited liability company and changes its’ name to Identrus
- 1999: Digital Signature Trust Company begins to issue ECA digital certificates under the Interim ECA (IECA) Program
- 1999: The OCC provides conditional approval to the Bank of America, N.A. and Citibank, N.A. to establish and operate the Identrus certification authority network system
- 2000: The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announces that the Digital Signature Trust Company has received the first interim approval to operate on the Access Certificates for Electronic Services (ACES) contract which is managed by the Office of Information Security in GSA’s Federal Technology Service
- 2000: The OCC approves the investment of Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., in Identrus
- 2000: Saying it would “open up new frontiers of economic opportunity while protecting the rights of American consumers”, President Bill Clinton uses a digital certificate from the Digital Signature Trust Company to sign the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce act or eSign bill into law
- 2002: IdenTrus acquires the Digital Signature Trust Company (DST) from Zions Bancorporation and the American Bankers Association
- 2006: Identrus is renamed as IdenTrust, Inc.
- 2007: IdenTrust develops the Trust Network cloud hosting capability for Trust Network customers and begins hosting banks
- 2007: The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) certifies IdenTrust to issue digital certificates for the Department of Defense External Certificate Authority (ECA) program, replacing the IECA Program
- 2010: The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) issues an Interim Final Rule allowing IdenTrust to offer digital certificates for the Electronic Prescriptions for Controlled Substances (EPCS)
- 2014: IdenTrust is acquired by HID Global Corporation
- 2014: IdenTrust Global Common (IGC) Certification Authority achieves U.S. Federal Bridge Authority cross-certification allowing the issuance of government interoperable, IdenTrust-branded digital certificates
- 2015: IdenTrust adds PIV-I certificates to its’ cross-certification with the U.S. Federal Bridge Authority
- 2015: IdenTrust achieves Direct Trusted Agent Accreditation Program from EHNAC and DirectTrust
- 2016: IdenTrust becomes a participant in the DirectTrust Partnership for Patients Program, making it easier for patients and healthcare consumers to securely share personal health information
- 2016: IdenTrust ACES digital certificates are used in the first digital, end-to-end remote notarization platform
