A new type of Standard Assurance Certificate for the
State of Washington PKI
Roaming Certificates provide an additional storage option for Standard Assurance Certificates.
Subscribers can use a Roaming Certificate from anywhere on the Internet, much like a Username and
Password in other systems, but with all the features and security of a digital certificate.

- Private keys and passwords are never stored on a hard drive or in a database where they can be copied or stolen
- The Roaming Certificate's private key, used for signing and user authentication, is always protected by a password

- Roaming Certificates work with standard software programs that use digital certificates
Roaming Certificate Issuance
IdenTrust uses the same identity verification processes for Roaming Certificates as for other Standard Assurance Certificates issued under the Washington Certificate Policy. After applicants register online for a Roaming Certificate, IdenTrust conducts third-party verification of the applicant's identity, and then securely delivers an activation code to each approved subscriber.
Setup of a Roaming Certificate is simple. Once approved, a subscriber verifies receipt of their activation information by visiting IdenTrust's website. Then, the subscriber simply installs a small software tool - the Roaming Client - and creates a secure password. The Roaming Client can be installed on more than one computer if the subscriber works from multiple locations. Once the password is set, a subscriber is ready to authenticate themselves at secure
websites, such as Transact Washington,
and to use digital signature applications.
