Note: A step-by-step installation guide for all storage mechanisms will be provided
in a Welcome Kit once you have ordered your digital certificate.
1. SmartCard and Reader
There are a number of steps that must occur before you can retrieve a certificate and store it on a smartcard. A more detailed set of instructions
(including pictures) is provided with the smartcard kit.
The steps:
- Plug in the SmartCard Reader
- Plug the 9 pin-end plugs into your computer's serial port
- Plug the pass-through plug into the keyboard port
- Plug the keyboard into the back of the pass-through plug
- Prepare the SmartCard Token
- Insert the smartcard with the gold square facing up and in the direction of the arrow
- A green light should be visible on the smartcard reader after the card is inserted
- Follow the instructions in the Welcome Kit sent to you by IdenTrust and on the Web site for key generation and certificate retrieval
A full installation guide is included on the CD that you will receive with your SmartCard and
reader. IdenTrust strongly suggests printing out this manual before attempting the installation.

2. USB Token
There are a number of steps that must occur before you can retrieve a certificate and store it
on a USB Token.
The steps:
- Prepare the USB Token
- Insert the token in your computer's USB port or plug the extension cable into the USB port
- Follow the instructions in the Welcome Kit sent to you by IdenTrust and on the Web site
for key generation and certificate retrieval
A full installation guide is included on the CD that you will receive with your USB token.
IdenTrust strongly suggests printing out this manual before attempting the installation.

3. Setting Your Browser to Require a Password
All Standard Assurance Level Certificate users must protect their private keys with a password. This is important to ensure
that no one fraudulently uses your private key or certificate. Below are instructions for the latest browser versions so you
can password-protect your private key. Do not share your password with anyone.
Microsoft Internet Explorer
- IdenTrust has created a process to assist IE users in setting their browsers to prompt them for a password
when accessing the certificate and private key. The process is initiated at the time of retrieval and
consists of the steps outlined below:
| Creating a new RSA exchange key! |
Hit "ok" to begin the process. |
| Choose Security Level |
Select "high" to enforce password protection of the private key, click "next". |
| Select Certificate Name |
Select Name of your Certificate - this is the certificate you want to protect. |
| Create New Password |
Enter your password twice, click "finish". |
| Creating a new RSA exchange key! |
Enter your password again. |
| Signing Data with your private exchange key! |
Enter your password one more time, click "finish". |
Netscape Navigator
- Netscape will ask you to password-protect your private key storage. If this is your first certificate, all you
will need to do is enter a password when prompted the first time.
- If you are not prompted for a password when retrieving your certificate, then complete the following steps:
- Access the security information by either:
- Clicking on the "Security" button on the tool bar OR
- Using the "Communicator" menu through "Tools"Ç"Security Info"
- Select "Password" from the list of options along the left side of the dialogue box
- Select "Change Password"
- If you don't have a password, just type in the new password you select
- If you have a password, you can change it here
